Wicked Weekend

Last weekend Michael and I had plans! That didn't involve home projects! Or errands! Or trips to Georgetown! Or, incidentally, Adam, who we dropped off with my sister-in-law for a fun day with cousins, basketball games, and outdoor fun.

We had an adult, no-kids-in-tow day with my parents, my sisters and their husbands (also with no-kids-in-tow). Honestly, I think it's the very first time that just the 8 of us enjoyed time together. So what does an adult, no-kids-in-tow day involve? We began at the performing arts center taking in a matinee performance of the Broadway smash-hit Wicked.

It's the second time I've seen this show, having first seen it 18 months ago. You know how sometimes you see a movie a second time and it doesn't live up to the first viewing? Well, this one did! Sure, I knew the general plot line, but this time I could really just enjoy the music without concentrating on the lyrics and I could pick up on foreshadowing that I was oblivious to the first time. Man, can that Elphaba sing! I've always wondered what it would feel like to belt out a song with such strength range and pitch (on key, haha)! {Sigh} I'll spare you my attempts.

Since I was "in" on the storyline I was also conscious of how my family was enjoying the production, and afterward everyone raved about it. My mother's response: "I loved it." But then, I knew she would.

After the performance we wrapped up our day together with a group dinner. It was really, really nice to enjoy the company without the little ones (though we love them immensely) and have adult conversations. My favorite topic, though, was the show, and we laughed as we rehashed various lines from the play and different character quirks. We really should have taken a picture of us since I don't know when the 8 of us will all be out again together.

Wait, I just decided. This should be an annual event. Mark your calendars for next fall, family, because we're all getting tickets to see... something. Let's do it!

Special thanks to the family and friends that shared our little ones for the day. You all rock!

  1. Nope... it's gotta AT LEAST be bi-annual! Too much fun for just once a year!
