Goodnight, Sleep Tight

A few months ago I was with friends/fellow moms discussing favorite bedtime prayers, and we unanimously decided that the classic "Now I Lay Me" prayer, though sweet in its nostalgia, is actually quite frightening. I mean, if a child actually understood what he is saying in the line "If I should die before I awake, I pray the Lord my soul to take", he could have some major uncertainties about going to sleep.

Thankfully, my friend Marie, also a new mom, offered up a better alternative. She transcribed this from the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and it is a wonderfully sweet bedtime prayer. Special thanks to her for sharing it with me.

Time has come for me to sleep,
Lord, I thank Thee for Thy keep.
Watch this night well over me
And teach me, Lord, to trust in Thee.
Many sins I've done today;
Please, Lord take them all away.
Look upon me in Thy grace;
Make me pure before Thy face.
Care for children sick and poor,
Grant them, Lord, Thy blessing more
Care for Mom and Dad the same
This I pray in Jesus' Name.
Amen
